Previous Research on Art Therapy

Art therapy is utilized and recognized by many mental health professionals as a method of improving mental health concerns such as cancer, depression, anxiety, dementia, and cognitive impairments, and acts as a method of therapy for autistic individuals (Hu et al., 2021). Art therapy can be useful in helping both adults and adolescents. Current research on art activities to improve the mental health of students has proven the usefulness of using art as a way to educate and improve mental health. Though many art curricula are often designed for teens with specific mental health concerns, there are not many resources on aiding teachers in educating and helping their students with mental health in elementary school classrooms. Art therapy websites, such as PositivePsychology.com, often only offer a sparse amount of activities for elementary students. The purpose of this website is to combine all these activities into one area, while catering it more towards elementary school students. Research published at BMC Psychology shows that mental health practices such as Mindfulness programs are proven to be effective, specifically improving life satisfaction, mindfulness, and optimism among children aged 7-11-year-olds (Amundsen et al., 2020).
